Bull shark
The bull shark has been named thus, due to the literal translation of the English “bull shark”;
although in reality, the correct name is sada shark. However, the term has become very popular, so in several places it is called this way. And they called it bull because of the similarity it shows with that animal in its snout, its strength and its weight.
This species of shark can move through fresh or salt water. Scientists are still wondering why they move in fresh water; the reason, it seems, is that they bathe in these waters to get rid of the parasites that live in salt water.
Bull sharks are mostly found in shallow coastal waters. This is the reason why they come to Playa del Carmen. Pregnant females come every year in the season from November to March to give birth to their young and leave them in an area protected from other predators. Another argument could be that they seek out the freshwater outlets of the cenotes, which are protected by mangroves and are an ideal place for their young to grow up.
That is why we chose the female Bull Shark as the “Symbol of Playa del Carmen.”
