Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

This small church is located on Avenida Juárez and 5a. Avenida, next to Parque Fundadores. It was built in 1960. A group of locals set out to find a place where they could worship the Virgin of Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen. Fishing was the main source of income at the time. Thus, they managed to obtain a plot of land measuring 12 by 6 meters, initially. Later, they expanded the atrium and added the bell tower and the central cross.

The chapel is one of the attractions of Playa del Carmen as it is a place of spiritual contemplation and peace. Regardless of whether you are a follower of religion or not, you can relax and listen to your thoughts while looking at the sea in the background through a beautiful stained glass window, framed by the decoration of beautiful plants.

It is a white building with high ceilings and a statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe made of stone. To enter, there is a small wooden bridge that symbolizes the transition from the mundane to the divine; from the bustle of the city, to the silence of the enclosure and the contemplation of the sea and the sky.

For all these reasons, we chose the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmen as the “Symbol of Playa del Carmen.”
